From April 2023 to November 2023, ten journalists from crisis areas will be invited to Berlin for four months each.
Reporters Without Borders Germany offers journalists from war and crisis areas the opportunity to take a 4-month break in Berlin and undergo training in digital security.
It aims to provide participants with practical knowledge and skills to protect themselves against digital threats such as surveillance or hacker attacks in their journalistic activities. . In the second phase, with the support of the teaching staff, the participants prepare their training ideas, through which they can pass on the newly learned knowledge to their colleagues back home. home as a teacher. This way, journalists outside of the fellowship program can also benefit from the digital security skills taught in the program.
The program is funded by the Department of Economy, Energy and Public Enterprise of the Berlin Senate.
Eligibility for Berlin Scholarship for Journalists 2023
Professional reporters, bloggers, media specialists, and citizen reporters who:
- are facing digital threats due to their work in their home region.
- want to learn and work intensively with digital security to improve their personal security.
- interested in passing on the knowledge gained in a fellowship to colleagues in their home region and ideally already have experience in teaching or knowledge transfer areas other.
- able and willing to participate fully in the program.
We expect candidates to be willing to participate in all activities of our program, including comprehensive training in digital security. Please wait approximately 20-25 hours per week during the second to fourth month of your stay in Berlin.
Requirements
- Applicants must have a very good command of English, as the entire scholarship program will be conducted entirely in English.
- Candidates must have sufficient experience as a journalist, either as a professional journalist or as a citizen journalist.
- No high level of digital security is required; Anyone who has ever worked with computers and smartphones can sign up.
- Able and willing to participate fully in all program activities (see above: Who can apply)
- In addition, applicants must demonstrate that they are ready to return to their home country after receiving a scholarship in Germany.
- A first experience in teaching would be desirable.
Benefits
- Reporters Without Borders will cover travel costs, take care of all visa-related matters, provide and pay for an apartment in Berlin for the duration of the fellowship, a monthly stipend of 900 € per month, free use of public transport in Berlin and an extensive training program with qualified experts in the field of digital security.
