At home, whispering of fields unsown
Always it woke him even in France
Until this morning and this snow
If anything might rouse him now
This kind of old sun will know
Think how it wakes the seeds
Woke, once, the clays of a cold star
Are limbs, so dear achieved, are sides
Full-nerved still swarm too hard to stir
Was it, for this the clay grew tall?
O what made fatuous sunbeams toil
To break Earth's sleep at all.

The poem can be described as

This poem is an elegy. It is not a sonnet. Although it has fourteen lines. The mistake you are likely to make is to call it a sonnet because of the fourteen lines it contains. There are other elements of a sonnet that are not contained in the poem. One of those elements is that it must be an iambic pentameter.

Iambic pentameter is a poetic meter in English verse where each line consists of ten syllables. These syllables are divided into five pairs, or "feet," with each foot containing two syllables.

It then implies that every sonnet must have ten syllables in each line. These ten syllables must be easily divided into two parts, which contain five syllables each. In the case of the poem, the lines are not in iambic pentameter.

An elegy is a form of poetry that expresses feelings of sadness, mourning, or lamentation, often written to commemorate someone who has passed away. Elegies can also be used to express deep sorrow or reflect on a tragic event or loss.

The poem is an elegy because details an event where a group of soldiers attempts to resuscitate an unconscious soldier by moving him into the warm sunlight on a snowy field. However, the "kind old sun" cannot help the soldier – he has died.
